Snowman:

Pick a frosty colour of yarn, either white or a shade of white, like a delicate duck egg blue or the palest pistachio green. You can also choose a yarn with spots, sparkles or a metallic thread; there are lots of great ones out there.

If you are an intermediate or an advanced knitter, why not try a luxury wool: cashmere, alpaca, mohair, camel, angora? NB: beginners should stick to plain wool, as these are harder to work with.Eyes, nose, mouth and buttons:

Ideally, these should be black – although it is up to you what you want your snowman to look like.

Scarf:

This can be in whatever colour or yarn you like. You should try to match weight though.

So if your snowman is DK (4ply), your scarf should be too, to ensure it all balances out.

My recommendation would be to choose a medium-weight yarn, one that requires 4 – 5 mm needles. Beginners should definitely opt for the larger option, as bigger needles and thicker yarn are easier to work with. Those with more experience can experiment more.

My yarn was 2ply and my needles were 2 mm. I picked an angora yarn to make it feel special, almost huggable, and to lift it. I adapted my nose, making a carrot instead of coal – fiddly but definitely worth it.

• straight (not hooked)
• metal (not plastic)

Knitting needles:

To match yarn – so if you have bought a 4ply, your needles will need to be between 3.5 – 4.5 mm.

Materials can be bought in all independent yarn and haberdashery shops, some pound and Chinese shops, selected department stores and also online. If you are unsure of what to pick, be sure to ask for help at the time of buying; most shop assistants are lovely and only too willing to help.
